I've been back in my glass studio lately...working on some new ideas...and really enjoying myself....i found an interesting object to use as a stencil design at the Gabriola Recycling Depot.....my friend Carole Reid , who is a wonderful artist, was here for a visit a while back and she wanted to go to the depot...it is a great place for mixed media artists... i picked up an old piece of junk, an old furnace grate and thought it would make a cool stencil to create my own home made patterned sheet glass....and so it did, as you can see in these pix....much more to come as i explore all my new patterned glass.....

i've been at the Poetry Gabriola Festival this weekend.....it has been soooo amazing.....spoken word and music, powerful performers who really lay it on the line.....emotional, heartfelt, heavy hitting, soul stirring.....

at the end of the last two nights i have come back to my studio and thrown some paint around.....as you can see......the spoken word people are seriously fearless performers and it inspires me to be fearless also......both of these paintings have other work underneath....in the 1st one only the eye survived the creative flame....for now......and the woman and the words are from an old farm catalogue....i love the old timey look......these 2 pieces also kinda spring from my wild pony that i wrote about a couple of posts ago...remember? check it out....you'll see what i mean.....the bottom 2 pix are close-up shots....

Brave Buffalo Hearts

it seems i always come back to buffalo.....when i am ready to paint, after creating some glass art, because at this point glass art almost always comes first....so yah, when i am ready to paint and i play with this and i play with that, and over paint and scrape and try to make something specific...for example the erotic show and the heart show i spoke of in an earlier post...sometimes i struggle when i arrive with a plan....

with these pieces all 3 came together fairly quickly after i brought out my buffalo imagery.....

so, i guess there's a message there for me......

i still love buffalo........

Divine Hearts

i believe in divinity, my mom used to make divinity fudge!! but that's not what i'm referring to....i am talking about divinity in our own humble selves and in our lovers and friends, even though it is hard to see sometimes in our complex human relationships......this is the journey of the spirit.....

these are 2 tiny wall gems...only 3" x 4"...... reflecting some of my thoughts on this......namaste.....did you know that when you say namaste you are saying "the divine in me honours the divine in you"?...i think that is beautiful.....i love the word...it is used as a greeting in india....sweet.....namaste friends.....

My New WILD Horses

as you may know.....i've been loving painting horses for a while now....and a couple of months ago i bought this totally awesome horse pin (see below) from my friend Kate Wood she is a great artist, she paints, makes silver jewelry, and is a sculptor of ceramics...she's been creating her ceramic art down at the highly creative Feedlot Studio....so, yah, i picked up this great horse pin, i wear it on my green vest or my jean jacket all the time!! i love it very much...i think she really picked up on some cool horse feeling in it and it pleases me.....plus i love purple and green together...and i also like how the black is in there too.....i have black in everything i create....if there is no black, or dark dark gray it feels too light weight for me......as you can see, the pin has influenced me....one night i just picked up the paintbrush and out emerged my very own Wild Horse!!! and i love her too (sure, maybe you think i'm overusing the word love, but really, it's true!!)...she also pleases me greatly, she feels like she has some life in her...and she is big...24" by 24".....as you can see i like to give my animals some larger than life human type eyes....the "Peace Chicken" at the bottom is the same.....

Variations on a Theme: Love

ok, so, you'd think i'd know by now that when you go into your creative world intent on creating some certain something that the muse is not necessarily there waiting for you.....but still i do this....big plans....ha ha....anyway, there is an amazing art show at Gabriola Artworks in Feb.....this annual show is called the "Erotica" show....and it is usually waaaay out there with great, uninhibited, even shocking!!! artworks in all mediums..... i have NEVER put a piece of art in this show.....i've been asked, but just never felt that particular muse calling to me.....

at the same time i have been asked to be part of a show at The Van Dop Gallery ......this is a little different.....the show is called "Heart to Heart".....as you can see, i am more inspired by the heart right now.....this does not mean that erotica is not relevant in my life, just that when i went to create art this week it was love and heart that wanted expression....i do think there is a chance that some erotica will emerge from my studio, it's just taking it's time...

A Journey into Africa....

i have recently had the great good fortune to have another opportunity to create a piece for someone's home.....the inspiration for the art piece is Africa.....and i have never traveled there so i have not had personal experience with this amazing, huge continent....although i have certainly had thoughts of Africa on my mind for a few years now.....so, this commission comes from a woman who regularly works in Africa as a nurse...she has traveled in Egypt, and has worked and lived for extensive periods of time in the Sudan and Uganda.....i have HUGE respect for the people in our world who are willing to serve in this way....thank you so much.....

she wanted a piece that showed the beautiful african women and the amazing Balboa tree.....and the intense reds and sienna colours of the countryside...

and also camels, because in some areas this is the only way you get around.....and i already love camels, i've been waiting for the right opportunity to invite them into my menagerie of animal spirits....

images of women working have been in my art before, from Vietnam, Guatemala and India...the difference this time is that i did not actually do the travels myself (someday maybe!)...my client gave me sooo much information and insight into her vision of Africa...and she said i captured it very well.... yay! thank you dear customer for waiting patiently for 2 years for this commission!!!!!!!

Our Wild Soul Spirit

here are couple of paintings that have undergone a few transformations along the way (like me!).....the only thing that stayed the same, more or less, was the horse image in each of them....everything else has layers and layers and layers.....i'm pretty good with them both at this time, although i like the top one best, the yellow one, the wild horses....they really feel like spirited beings to me.... the pink "breathe" horse may still change, but "wild soul spirit" is going to stay....i think....ha ha...such is the process

i like having the option of revisiting the work and revising it....it is not so easy to do this with glass, although i do....i make bracelets and wind chimes out of broken bowls and things....it works pretty well, lots of detail that way....

and, of course, the usual messages to myself...stay in touch with the wildness, and b r e a t h e.....ahhhh

this painting came about as a starter for getting some paint squeezed out and to start the process of playtime!!.....it was inspired by one of my fave glass bowls from a couple of years ago....which you can see in the next image....as you can see, glass and paint are quite different.....the glass is glossy and finely finished....and perhaps i could do that with paint, however, i don't want to even try!!!!

the whole reason that paint and mixed media is sooooooo appealing to me is because it can be raw and rough and kinda messy and still be quite groovy.....and even though my glass is quite imperfect, it is still a particular process and needs more care in assembly.....all of which suits me just fine too!!!

i feel endlessly grateful to have the choice to decide which medium to play in....depending on how i feel that day....(or sometimes depending on what opportunities i have for my creative offerings!) either way, i love it!!!!

p.s. oh yah, the painting is upside down...i didn't paint it that way, but that's the direction i liked best when it was done!!! with a bowl, every way is right side up!!

p.p.s. i'm in good company too, marc chagall was a painter and glass crafter as well!! not that i think i'm in his league or anything...just saying, there is a history of this....!!!! ha ha

Things I Like # 1 and # 2

WoW!!!! it is now 2012! i am excited to be back in my studio after a little time out doing other things.....it's always fun to take a little break and then jump back into something.....today i have been cleaning and re-arranging my studio for the next few winter months......in my studio this season is a little bit slower.....and i have more time to play around.....to experiment more than usual..... these pieces were done in my house over the holiday season....with the things i love all around me.....hence these 2 pages from my playbook.....they may or may not be finished.....time will tell if i feel the urge to add something....#1 feels a little empty on the left to me....it could be cropped....

i find that i am very influenced by what i see right around me.....and i LOVE drawing with india ink.....you can't really correct it, so my funky drawings stay just that.....it makes it very fun for me....i like splotchy and uneven lines....and then smears of paint to add some colour.....these were done in my mixed media journal.....it is NOT a sketch book....i really need to create a new easy name for my messy, experimental, experiential mixed media anything goes book.....any ideas are welcome....!!!

Home has many meanings for people.....for me, i am a serious homebody....and i am also a non-traditionalist....so at Christmas time i have mixed feelings....part of me loves the whole family thing.....although i live far from my family and it is not the time of year that i like to fly for just a short trip....as you know, airports are crazy at christmas....often i have been fortunate to be overseas at this time year....i've been on a bus in thailand, flying to vietnam, and also over on the glorious west coast of vancouver island and winter camping on a small island.....this year i am staying in my own humble, super cosy little home with my guy and our new houseguest cat....

i am just intending to seriously chill...play in my mixed media journal....do a little baking in something besides a glass kiln.....it has been a crazy busy year and i need to retreat a little....and i am very happy to do so......best wishes to you all.... enjoy your holiday time...busy or quiet....

Feline Serendipity.....

i have a great story for you!!! about a month ago we were fortunate to be asked to cat sit a wonderful cat named Cricket....we have not had an animal in our lives here for a few years so we were excited and a little nervous...especially because this little cat was someone else's dear sweet buddy.....well, on the very same day that the new cat was due to arrive in our home (for a year!!) i also had visitors to my art studio.....they saw my dog sculpture and asked if i ever made cats?????? i said "not really, however, a cat would be coming to live with us on this very day and no doubt i would be inspired by this marvelous creature".....

and, so this sculpture came into being.....these pix show a few steps of the process, although there were many more.....this shows from raw, unfused glass to the finished glass cat!! the glass cat is about 3 1/2 feet tall, so she is a major art piece.....

it was a really fun project, and i am soooo pleased to have been given the complete and total freedom to create a cat they way i wanted to create!!!

Listen.....or....the art of almost getting quiet

i have a huge desire to get quiet.....i am getting close to the time of year that supports quietude.....not just yet though...there is still the busy holiday season with all its' parties and social gatherings....which i love....however, i can also be quite reclusive....and i am yearning for that.....when we visited an ashram in india several years ago it was totally accepted and encouraged for people to wear a little sign that said "in silence"....i LOVE this idea.....i think my fellow islanders would respect this if i saw them while grocery shopping and had on my sign.....

after the solstice and the celebratory new year i will enter my studio just to play!!! and get quiet.... even though much of my studio time is play, there is also the business of art and galleries.....and the slower months for these is in january and february...i can try out new ideas in glass and paint.....yay!! big gratitude for my freedom to play and my creative space.....

p.s. for all those who know me well...yes, of course i can be chatty.....buuuuuut, i can also be quiet....fooled ya hey??

Our Wild Ways

i love horses....i always have, for as long as i can remember.....although i am not an experienced horsewoman at all.....it has been more of a love affair from afar....i have ridden.... and would feel comfortable on a horse.....i like the smell of the stable, and the smell of the horse.....aaaaand, i LOVE to see horses running....i just love it....it is such an image of power and grace....and it moves something in me that is beyond words....horses have appeared in my art for a couple of years now...since i started "free expression painting" with caroline james ......the buffalo emerged around that same time as well, both really old images in my life and they have also found their way into my glass.....

and to me, the horse and buffalo are intricately connected to the spirit and all that is sacred.......

Creative Balance

As some of you may know by now.....i am playing with paint and mixed media as well as my glasswork....it seems to always require some balance, as does most of life actually.....because i love both mediums, and also because i am best known for glass....so, i want to take people gently by the hand and ask them to follow me down a new and unknown path.....

and i have been most fortunate in that i have had a lot of support from my glass loving crowd.....thank you so much....i have some issues with allowing myself the time to play with paint...and i really need and want to play...i know that this is when really cool, heartfelt, sometimes raw, connected, brave art happens.....this winter i intend to create lots of time to play with paint and mixed media....and i also intend to share it with you.....wanna come along for the ride??

Little Girl's Dresses

yes, this may seem a bit different than you would expect from my muse....however she is very curious and she moves in all directions....although she seems always to be drawn to colour....these little wall gems just came about last year and have continued....during one of my free expression workshops with caroline james i discovered that i had some girl things i wanted and needed to connect with....

i made a lot of mixed media pieces about this (and i may share them with you someday!)....and used LOTS of pink paint....i loved using pink.....it is not really available in glass....or if available it is muted in tone and super duper expensive......so, alas i do not use....however when i started playing around with these little gems i did manage to mix up some red glass paint that burned out and left a kind of pinky colour....and then i used my usual saturated colour for the other pieces here....and black of course...to ground things...

these art pieces have gone through up to 3 firings in the kiln to create them....and then they are mounted on a painted wood panel with a hanger on the back.....and they look good standing up like this too....on a table top or shelf.....

Candy Apple Hearts

ok, so i know some people may think this looks a valentine's day blog post....however, i would like to say that being heart aware all through the year is the direction i wish to move......with open hearts we can make connections and grow and heal......although i've always made glass hearts i have not made them for a few years now....mainly because they were kinda fussy to make......hearts need a lot of care....

the other day i had a call from someone asking if i could make him 35 hearts....these are for a workshop he teaches about opening the heart....he wants all the participants to be able to hold a heart in their hand and to realize through actually holding a small heart in their hand how they can hold and support their own and anothers heart without clenching and gripping....

the example is to hold your hand with the palm upward and all the fingers open, with the heart gently supported, instead of clenching.....i think it is a great exercise and another reminder of how we can open and connect.....my glass hearts are not perfect, they are individuals with their own dents and soft spots and bruises, but still pumping and exuding energy.....plus they look as shiny as candy apples...yum!!

i'll be making them in all colours very soon!!!!!!!!!!!

India, Horns and Colour!!!!!!!

wow!!! i have finally finished this commission!!!! it took me a loooong time to bring it all together.....only because i was often pulled away from beginning the piece by other studio and life activities....luckily, the people who commissioned it are very patient.....i will be shipping this to australia!!!!! the customers have appreciated my work for awhile, and have actually lived in India for a few years and liked my interpretation of Incredible India.....with all of it's colour, vibrancy and super stimulating street and temple life!!!!! of course there is more PINK in india, with pink saris and paintings of the gods and goddesses...however pink glass is not an easy thing to come by.....

in India the trucks are all painted in glorious colour and design and the customers wanted me to design something that would remind them of this.....i liked the idea of the curvy frame and the exuberant flowers springing out the top.... that is how i remember India, bursting with life and activity....unless you are in meditation in the ashram....also the trucks always have signs painted on them saying "HORN PLEASE"...so of course you hear lots of horns ALL the time....it is quite chaotic sounding....

i've been thinking about india lately...not because i am planning to travel there any time soon....... i will be starting on a commission piece of work with india as the inspiration.....and the people i am creating it for already love my work and my india influenced work from a few years back....i LOVE india, the colours and the celebration and sheer overwhelming stimulation of the place is amazing...i will return someday...this winter i will return through my art.....the women are hardworking and beautiful and the sadhu's or holy men are equally beautiful...more on this in the next post.....stay tuned......

Sooooo many Carrots!!!

wow...only 2 more days till the studio tour....and i am soooo busy getting my studio ready....i also want to share with you all the groovy carrots......it is harvest time here on the island...there are amazingly yummy organic carrots being grown just down the road.....

and i am actually cookin' them up in my kiln.....made from glass of course....all varieties....wall tiles, hanging carrots...(these are displayed in the bucket above).....

and a few platters so far...if i work late and get up early i can make a larger round bowl filled with carrots too....before the studio tour begins.....

Surprise Surprise I'm back already

wow, that was fast....well, i really wanted to share these new paintings.......just mainly using a plastic pot scraper to apply the paint and a black china marker.....i am really loving the intensity of the colours.....

not sure if they are totally done.....the first 2 are i think....the last one might need some black scribbles under the horses hooves....for some energy.....

ok, well actually i just went and changed it all....so this bottom one is the final version for now....i have a feeling it may still evolve

....i'll keep ya posted.......i'll have these on show at the Thanksgiving Studio Tour coming up on oct. 8, 9, 10.

Work and Play

Hey all...it feels like a long time since i've been here, but it's only been just over a week......busy busy...and not all with creative fun work stuff....but what i have to show you is part of the good fun stuff.....

this oyster catcher platter was done by request.....someone loved another one of my abstract mosiac bowls and asked me to make her one, but in a square mold, and at the last minute she asked me to add in an oyster catcher....i ended up making 2 versions...this is the one she didn't choose.....the other has more yellow, and i forgot to get a pic of it before it left my studio......anyway, i really like this look and i intend to do some more in this style, different sizes and shapes, maybe a fish instead of an oyster catcher...or maybe a buffalo.....who knows??

and then, for play time one night i spontaneously started applying paint with a pot scraper onto a big piece of paper.....and this is what emerged....i love all the crazy colours, and of course i LOVE the buffalo....to me they represent strength and bravery......there is lots here to explore...i also did some horse imagery as well.....more on that later.....also thinking about making some glass totem poles.....with things that are meaningful to me on the totem....so it could contain many different creatures.....i won't think too much, only how to support the glass...the creation of the totem itself will no doubt be very free form....maybe i'll even have some for the studio tour...only 2 1/2 weeks till then!!!!!!!!!!!!! yikes!!

Fun Times with Beach Plywood and Paint.....

yes, of course i know....there have been sooo many bees and chickens coming out of my studio this year.....what's it all about you ask?? well, i'm not totally sure....some of it is just the fact that i feel that bees are somewhat under appreciated, considering all the amazing hard work that they do to help sustain our lives on this planet....and, i love the graphic contrast of yellow and black, the stripes being so bold.....

i found these chunks of plywood on the beach when we were out camping and they were perfect canvases....i really really love the texture and imperfections.....i am crazy for imperfections actually....and if anything is too perfect (to my eye) i lose interest in exploring it further.....that does not mean i do not appreciate well done work of any kind....i am seriously impressed with the skill level required to create highly technical, perfect work.....it just doesn't make my heart leap....my intellect sees and appreciates, my heart is unimpressed....

and i suppose my work sometimes looks rather child-like as well.....i was told by one of my mentors (i'm fortunate to have more than one!!!)......."don't resist"........i like this sentiment....if ya wanna paint another funky chicken then just go ahead and paint it.....and if you must scribble, then go for it....i have found a lot of power in scribbling...if you allow......it will take you places.... guaranteed....don't be a chicken with your playtime....follow your heart and instincts....xoxoxo

Arts on the Avenue Show

so, as you may know, i was down to the Arts on the Avenue show at Ladysmith last weekend

it is a nice art show, with some really great art. i was invited to be the guest artist and had a 20 x 20 covered area to inhabit for the day.....cool hey??

i only had 1 1/2 hours to set up so i was grateful to have 3 helpers for most of that time....whew...it was a rush for sure...to put on a full glass show in that short of time is crazy!!! but we did it....i had amazing help at home on gabriola to get me started... thanks to kathy ramsey!! gallery owner extraordinaire.... and i also had some great display stands built by my guy....yay!!!

the volunteers were helpful and friendly.... kathy, rita, claudio, rod, wendy, mimi (love that name)...thanks to all of you...and it was a big crowd, with some real art appreciators.....thank you Ladysmith!!

Street Art and Theatre Fest

i wanted to share with you a few pix of my stall at Street Art....this was an art show in conjunction with the Gabriola Theatre Fest.....it is an awesome festival....i saw 5 plays as well as showed my work on saturday and sunday....whew.....that was quite a weekend......

i just has this display built...i like it a lot...for my paintings and also my glass wall tiles.....it worked great, and helped to define my space....

and i started selling groovy stir stix....they look the best in a clear drink, clear beverage inside clear glass vessel....and then the coloured stir stix look totally sexy!!!! G & T 's are my fave for the stir stix, but mineral water with a bit of fresh mint looks good too......yum!! thanks to all who came by to say hello....next up Arts on the Avenue in Ladysmith, on Sunday Aug.28th.....i have been asked to be the guest artist....i am honoured and will bring my best work to show!!! come by for a visit it you're in the area....

Oyster Catchers are Groovy Quirky Birds...

i love oyster catchers....they are one of my fave birds.... along with chickens and crows, as you know by now......i like how they strut along the shoreline....only a certain tide height will do, ya know....and they peck here and there on the beach....and they have a bit of an "ants in the pants" thing going on.....i love it when they are backlit and the sun shines through their bright orange beeks....looks kinda like glass!! just glowing.......

i've been creating oyster catchers in glass for a few years....bowls, windows, platters.....and just the other day i made some small oyster catcher garden stakes....they are suuuper funky....i totally smile when i look at them....and they will look soooo sassy in a garden....against the green of a coastal winter yard, or the brilliant colours of a summer garden....anything goes with these gals....

they look especially good in a small gathering, the way you often see them on the shoreline....alone works too though, cause you always see at least one off by herself, away from the crowd!!! we all need alone time after all.....

i have had pineapples in my glass before...hanging pineapples and garden pineapples....that was a few year ago and i have been re-inspired to create pineapples again..well, after all, they are juicy and colourful, and i think they are kinda fun, like bananas (more later on the bananas).....with little pokey bits and exuberant green tops.....the big pineapple inspiration this year was in my travels to see friends in borneo!!!! no kidding, really.... far flung borneo....stu and rose have a groovy little farm, down by the river...and they are growing pineapples right there in the backyard!!! although backyard makes it sound so contained.... really it is miles of wilderness all around.....it is fenced though to keep out the water buffalo!!!! i love it....and ya know i love the water buffalo too! we even helped to plant some new little pineapples....and, on the 1st morning in our little cabin out in the wilds we had a fresh pineapple delivered right to our door (thanks stu)....how coooool is that???????? yes, you're right, it is totally cool...and super juicy!!! yummy...

only 1 more day till my solo show opens at Gabriola Artworks....i am very excited....it is quite cool to finally compile all the work in one place, outside of my studio.....ya know, a space that is dedicated to showing art....and kathy at artworks is stellar at putting on a great show....it is always lots of fun...always a surprise to me to see the work in display...

hey everyone!!! i wanted to introduce you to some of my new pals....they've been hanging around my studio a lot in the last little while....but i am going to take them out to a show this thursday, aug.4th....right here on gabriola island, @ gabriola artworks....this is of course, my art show....and these little faces belong to a few of my newest creations.....i've kinda been all over the map this year with ideas and work....but it's all connected, at least from my perspective....aaaaaand, i have been having a real good time in my studio!!! i LOVE creating in my wonderful amazing studio space!

Bali Dawgs and other Scribbles

ya'll will be seeing a bit more of me this week, on the blog that is.....at least that's my plan.....since i have a solo show coming up at Gabriola Artworks in less than a week, on aug.4th, so i want to get the word out.....artworks shows are always a great time....the fabulous Dinah D will be there to entertain and keep things lively with her awesome singing and playing.....the drinks will flow and the glass will glitter....and there will be a few paintings as well.....

these ink and watercolour drawings were done in bali this winter.....dogs, dogs, dogs.....bali dogs specifically......or, my version of them....and they are an inspiration for my glass...as you will see at my show.....at least one large glass dog, and maybe puppies too....

as you can see, i cut out the dogs from the first paper and glued them into my journal and scribbled and painted all around them.....it was fun....try it sometime, it's amazing how liberating scribbling can be....i LOVE it.....i am digging messy and kinda weird and absolutely totally not symmetrical.....

Camping and Crows

so, i've been away for a few days....camping by the seaside.....and holy crow!!! sooooo many crows where we were, it becomes easy to see their routines and habits....not a robin in site.....and as you know, i LOVE crows.....and even though they are not a large part of my current body of work, when i see them i wanna play with the image.....these are quickie playtime shots from my visual journal.....so, not too much thought put in...just playing with colour and shape.....

this second image is quick drawings with a sharpie felt pen, and then filled in with all colours that pleased me in the moment.....plus, polka dots!!!! this is different shots of the same curious crow as the keyboard played on the beach...checkin' it out....

and then.... dogs are actually part of my current glass work....i am having a solo show on aug.4th, on gabriola, and will be showcasing "jolene" my life size dog sculpture.....she is sassy and cute, and i am lovin' her alot.....anyway, on this next page are some quick drawings, again with a sharpie....the type of dog kinda looks like my old dog, sarah, who has been gone awhile now.....she taught me alot....i think dogs really are quite buddha nature....they definitely live for the moment....the same path is filled with new delights on a daily basis....i attempt to capture that feeling now and then when i am walking....before bizzzzzy brain starts up again....it's a process.....ahhhhh......

Bees, Clotheslines and Frit

Ok, so i have talked about frit before, it's crushed glass, and gives a different, kinda fuzzy look....and i think i have even showed some pix of the first bee work of this year....and now i have a bit more....well, actually A LOT more....but i am just sharing a bit right now...most of these glass bee pieces are in preparation for my upcoming Solo Show at Gabriola Artworks in a few weeks, on thursday Aug.4th to be exact! and, as you can see, i have a little fascination with clotheslines....i really love clotheslines, and fresh clean clothes hanging from them.....that's the homebody in me for sure....

these last 3 pix are where it kinda all began for me last year, with bees....well, The Kerplunks have an awesome song called "honeybee" and we have a boat named "honeybee" and some of my closest friends are bee keepers.... and well, yah, i love bees and honey.....yummm!

so, yah, these last 3 are small bits from my mixed media, messy, play around, do whatever books....they are done with india ink and water colours....i like it when the ink kinda smears around the bees....i like smeary, messy stuff.....like life can be sometimes.....

i was also reading a book at this time called "the secret life of bees" by sue monk kidd.....and, oh yah, i have a friend who is a stilt walker who dresses up like a bee!!! how cool is that??!! annnnnnd, my other friend gave me a funky bee charm, strung on a stretchy piece of purple cord!!! it is sweet sweet!! ahhh, gratitude.....xo

Colourful Crows and Finding Home

crows have appeared in my work again this year....and of course they are a constant in my life....crows are very adaptable and extremely clever so i think everyone can relate to the crow....crows are a relatively new addition to my work, in the last couple of years....i have long been inspired by them, however i have been reluctant to use the imagery in my work...partly because 2 of my fave artists, Grant Leier and Sheila Norgate have been using these images in their work for some time now....however, on good advice from them, i have discovered that all images are up for grabs.....you just have to take it and make it your own...put your own unique twist on it, as only you can do....if it's calling to you, don't resist...

Goodbye Ruby Tuesday

ahhhhh, dear sweet Ruby......i can honestly say that i cried as she went out the laneway on the way to her new home in sunny manitoba.....it was kinda surprising to me, the tears.....of course i am totally thrilled that she has found a new home on the great plains of this country.....where she truly belongs......she will feel right at home in the tall prairie grasses, with the extraordinary, perfectly blue, expansive prairie sky.....hmmmm.....i love the feel of the prairies myself.....i imagine the time when buffalo roamed in herds of 30,000 or more....absolutely amazing to contemplate this......ruby, sweet ruby....you have touched my heart in completely unexpected ways.... thank you for sharing some time with me here by the sea!!!

i love the colour turquoise....absolutely LOVE it....as you can see.....and in my mind, this colour perfectly suits the imagery of herons, and stillness....

and also, to me, herons and stillness are interconnected....when you see them fishing along the shore line, they are sooooo still.....if i just take a moment to watch them i can connect with some of that quiet energy.....

i am continually attempting to "allow" myself quiet time....not just alone time, i get lots of that....and i need it....but quiet time....doin' nothin' time....i do know that when i quiet my mind my creativity soars.....back to the 1st sentence now....the colour turquoise, mmmmmhmmm....it can also be bright and shiny and have a loud presence....like my V.W. van.....it stands out in a crowd.....

Old Stuff with Recurring Themes...

I have posted a few older pix this time...not because i have nothing new....anyone who knows me knows that there is plenty of new art in my studio and heading out into the world!!! because i am what you might call a "prolific creator"....this is something i used to be kind of embarrassed about...yah, weird hey??....i think it's because i used to equate quantity with less quality, or the slower and more meticulous the process the better the work....however....i now know differently, it can and does work both ways....and i have absolutely excellent examples of practicing artists who are every bit as prolific, if not more so, than i am...and they are producing great work! and for me, the more i make, the better it is...whether it is glass art, mixed media, my journal/messy art book....

and, i have learned sooo much more about the creative process, and how different it is for everyone....but also, that there are many similar things about successful artists.....and also, how creativity goes in cycles, just like everything else in life....and sometimes you just need to be accepting of where you are in your own cycle....

I am busy as a bee these days.....whew!!! annnnd, i LOVE seeing and hearing sooo many bees around lately...this makes me very happy...they are buzzzzzing around my kale plants that have totally gone to flower cause i have been soooooooooooo consumed with other things!!!! still, i am eating kale every day..i LOVE it....and have been reluctant to cut back the plants because the bees are so happy there....the kale are like small trees right now, as tall as me!!!!!!!!!!!!

and earlier this spring we had bright red tulips all over....big bursts of colour! awesome to see, they had huge flowers on them...just so full of life....the 1st time for me to have tulips in my garden....although "garden" suggests that there is some tending going on....lush jungle would be more accurate...good thing i like things on the wild side....

more bees in glass, on wood and a variety of combinations, as you've seen on other posts....i find that when the imagery really feels right it will appear and reappear for years to come....like fish, and leaves, flowers and fruit, even vegetables.... i liked dill pickle wind chimes the best, haven't made them for a while, maybe because i have not canned up real edible dill pickles for a long while either...buffalo, horses, birds, chickens, eggs.....bees are one of my favourite little beings right now.....

my sketchbook shows many things of my life...including giant bees, no kidding....i saw bees as big as small hummingbirds in indonesia this past winter.....luckily they did not seem to sting....

and i have been digging the whole bee scene for awhile now....since last year for sure....we have a boat named "honeybee" and then my talented friends with a kid's band called "The Kerplunks" wrote a song called honeybee.....it's a great little tune....

this pic above shows 3 versions of something quite similar...the first dish is a fused glass piece...all 100% pure glass, and then beside that is a fused glass tile mounted onto painted wood, and the 3rd in line is mixed media paint on wood panel....the same sentiment runs through them all....Bee True.....i feel this is important, most especially to yourself....

i just love glass!!!! i am sharing a pic of "Ruby"....she is a beautiful prairie buffalo....bison to be totally correct...but i really like the word buffalo...in Indonesia there are many words like this...names like kalibukbuk....and words such as hati hati...this means "use caution"....but it is a fun way of saying it....hati hati when cutting glass, or you will be bleeding from super sharp glass cuts on your fingertips in no time!!!

Here are a few new small dishes....there are fish, chicks and pineapples....the fish and pineapple have been long time motifs in my glass...in the top pic of tulips in my garden you will see a pineapple garden stake, from several years ago....this year the pineapples have made it into bowls and platters ....they are very bright and summery looking...i'll have more images of these as they come through the fusing process in the next few days....

and then these bottom 2 pix....well, i just love colour, and coloured glass, and also the way the light shines through and adds a whole other dimension to the art work....it bring me joy to see the colour just shining on through...hhhmmmmm.....yum...

Chickens, Chickens running round my brain....

Oh yah, there are some chickens running around my studio.... they all began in bali, where i painted the top image ...where there are chickens runnin' around everywhere....totally free range....and slim and athletic....especially compared to our heavy breasted birds here in the west.....although i did just see some new not quite fully grown chickens here on gabriola island, and they were looking pretty sassy....

all of these pieces are mixed media on wood panel...i really love the texture that comes through when you over paint many times on the same canvas a la sheila norgate she's the "queen of the blank canvas"....no fear about beginning again, and creating anew on an existing painting.....you can look back at one of my earlier posts, "new images from spring studio" and see the where the inspiration of colour and texture came from......funky boxes made from old javanese fishing boats.....go back and take a peek, you'll see what i mean.....

little chick here has already been about 4 different paintings underneath....and i really LOVE this one....i think it's a keeper for sure.....

and i made the "run wild" piece for my mom, cause she was playing with paint, and i wanted to encourage her to PLAY!!!! cause i know that this is where all the best stuff comes from...when we loosen up and just see what happens....ya know, that little voice that says "i wonder what would happen if i tried this??" and before we can judge ourselves out of spontaneity, we just allow ourselves to go there.....it is good for your soul....ahhhhhhh

it's all about "allowing ourselves"....and the results are often heartfelt and magical.....

Chicks Rule and Much More.......

well, apparently i am back at square one figuring out how to do this colour thing....since i got a new laptop....my old laptop was seriously under-rammed, so doing pretty well anything on the computer took sooooooo long.....but alas, i must learn a new system, cause i bought a mac.....recommended by 3 super talented, artsy friends of mine....it's a whole new world for sure.....

anyway, as you can see, i am cooking up chickens in my kiln ....lots of 'em actually....in bowls, platters, teeny tiny little friendship gems, and also, sculptural pieces as shown below....i have not named her yet....i'm thinking something like "betsy"....................she has 3 blue eggs she's about to lay.....

and then, 2 of my images have just disappeared....so.... arghhhhh......moving on, the next image is a tiny little mixed media piece....this piece describes me perfectly...."homebody".....i love my little home and studio tucked away in the forest.....and the next pic is this great little vintage chair that i bought at a garage sale last weekend....and i just LOVE it....stacked on it are colourful jars of glass frit...this is crushed glass...and i will show you the little gems that i made with frit next time....and then next up is another shot of of a chicken bowl....the flowers beside it were given to me by a good good friend of mine.....and the little pitcher the flowers are in is one that i made when i took a glassblowing workshop several years ago.....and then i discovered fusing, a perfect fit for my personality.. .....and now i am discovering mixed media......yay, i love them both, and they are sooo different (more on that in another post)........but the same sensiblities come through, colours and imagery i am attracted to.....as you will see when i figure out how to do this again and can post more paintings......

Groovy Glass Show and Sassy Chickens

Here are some pix of my glass from the Vancouver Island Glass Show, which just happened in Nanaimo on April 23rd....

so, the 1st 2 pix are from the show...and it was a good show, very well attended...many talented glass artists, and quite a diverse array of glass art!! i think the show has mucho potential to grow and evolve into something quite cool.....the last pic is an image of a brand new bowl!! with long legged sassy chickens....i saw sooooo many chickens in bali, and i loved seeing them running all over.....truly Free Run chicks, which is kind of how i want to operate in the world, especially in my creative practice.....and that is the only kind of eggs i wanna eat!!!....even saw a chicken running through an art museum....really, ya gotta love that.....also, soon to come, well they are already created, just have to post them so you can see them too....free range chicken mixed media pieces!!!! i am really likin' the whole chicken thing, i have had chickens in my glass before ....aaaaaand i will have some dogs coming into the scene too!!! bow wow!

Spring Fever Part 2

ok,ok, i'm nearing the end of my skull mania....of course there will be more skulls, but you'll have to come find me to see them!!! these ones are on sturdy steel stakes...perfect for getting deep into the ground to keep 'em steady in all weather...

this is bit closer up...i like them, they make me feel happy, they are kinda like pals already, they feel like they have their own character...and great beautiful WHITE teeth...already 2 are leaving home to other gardens!!!

these last 2 pix are bowls and little tiny dishes....using the same simple frit technique....they feel very fresh, very spring like to me...and 2 smaller ones are on clear glass, even more light....it feels like it's time to lighten up....as you will soon see when i launch my new website....but i always have BLACK in there somewhere, to ground me i guess....it always feels essential.....

Spring Fever: Part 1

This sign that says "All Kinds of Skulleton"..this was from bali....i loved the word skulleton....and in front of the shop was a huge pile of carved wooden skulls!!! it was early and they were still covered with a tarp and i did not get a pic (still kicking myself over that one)...but they looked really cool....this was in an area where everyone is a wood carver....so i decided to make a skulleton bowl, cause i really like the hanging skulls, and garden stake skulls, i don't find these skulls menacing at all, they are more in the spirit of the mexican celebration type skulls, so, ya know, a fiesta bowl!! .....i also liked the fresh spring look of the frit (crushed glass) on the white glass background so i carried on with other imagery as well....leaves, flowers, hearts have been appearing in my work for quite a while now....the bees and the blue eggs just appeared last year.....and of course, along with eggs come chickens....which i will be sharing in my next post....many mixed media pieces with free range chicks....and also, a super groovy glass chicken....she's just in the oven right now, ready to come to life....i don't actually cook any chickens in my kiln of course, or even in my oven....being a veg type gal and all.....! chickens are not new in my glass work either, they go back a few years for sure.....i still like 'em...they are funny, funky birds...

Pretty Hanging Skulls (mostly)

ok, well i'm back....like i said, with more skulls.....and just a little note for all you NON skull lovers, i have many other things on the go in my studio as well.....like bees!!!! ya know the buzzing bumbling humble little bee's that support our life on this planet??? and of course flowers....cause bees need 'em, and they are beautiful design imagery.......for now though, back to the skulls.....the 1st image is a pic i took TODAY, just outside my studio door.....with the new skull hangy things....they are definitely "el dia del muerte" mexican type skulls....i like the daisy eyes and i really like the idea of celebrating with your fave people who have moved on to other realms....so, i find these skulls quite happy and feel good, and as they slowly spin around the movement is quite entrancing..

the 2nd image is a shot from my journal/sketchbook.....this i did while traveling in borneo, malaysia.....and in that country the skulls are a whole different thing...although still involved in a belief system.....the tribal people were (many many many years ago) traditionally headhunters....yah, i said headhunters!!!! and the trophies from inter-tribal warfare were oftentimes skulls of the enemy.....and, they believed that the skulls had magical powers, the fresher they were the more powerful the magic!!!!! wild hey??

.. ok, so, i am not an anthropologist, this is the just a little info i picked up from museums and books as we traveled through the country, .....most longhouses would no longer have skulls hanging from the ceiling...and it is most assuredly NOT still a custom.....the people are super friendly....not threatening at all, ha ha.....they also believed that beads had/have magical powers as well, more on that another time.....oh yah, i took the pic of the "real" skull in a musuem in borneo.....that's why it's blurry, you were NOT supposed to take pix in there!!! ssshhhhh

New Images from the Spring Studio

here are some pix from my studio today!!!! i told you there would be more skulls coming along, and the 1st image is of a 100 year old buffalo skull, found on the prairies of southern alberta...... the next is shot in my office area, some art by local women, friends and matisse of course....and beautiful mayan girls...a pic from a calender put out by Seva....a canadian non profit that helps people all over the world with cataracts and blindness

oh yah, and in the 1st image, beside the skull, are these beautiful boxes, they are made from old javenese fishing boats, and i fell in love with them in bali....and would have brought whole shelves and cupboards made from these boats if i could have....as it was, we were backpacking, and even these took up a bit of space.....and there is some weight to them also, being hardwood and all.....but i just LOVE the flaky paint and textured surface....the patina of life on the south china sea......and then some pix of my new glass.....it is sooooo nice to see the glass fresh out of the kiln....all glossy and really yummy looking.....

i LOVE LOVE LOVE my studio and i am soooo grateful to have this space, just for creating,......and to share a bit with ya'll now too..... oh yah, i have no idea why the colour did not work around the flowers....BUT, i did get colour in the other areas....YAY!!!! and i have no idea why some of the text is underlined.......????? but i now see that it isn't anymore and i don't know why, ahhh well...... i have faith that i will learn these things....i think...

Real Live Water Buffalo (ya gotta love em)

the 1st image was taken on a splendid beach in india.....these guys came down the beach, walking a looooong way, and then they gave the water buffalo a real nice sea salty bath, oooh yaaaaah....it was cool to see this humble animal on the beach where northern hemisphere types were lounging on beach chairs.....she had probably put in a hard day making a living in the hot hot hot south indian sun!!!!!..

and another image of buffalo strolling down the road....it looks like they are heading to the river....they seriously LOVE to lounge in the water..... as you can see in this pic.....this buff looks positively BLISSED out.......they were so lovely and graceful in the water.......and then finally!!!!! tah dah!!!!!! "Hoi An"....my water buffalo created in glass......so, you can see some of my inspiration along the way.....she was created a few years ago, and many other animals, some from real sources, and some from imagined places have come to life in glass since that time....and .more to come, for sure .......and another entry without a coloured background....that's a little frustrating for me cause i have gotten used to putting colour wherever i want it....maybe i have been taking all my colour control for granted..... hmmmmm

I love skulls!!!! especially buffalo skulls...although i would never wish the animal dead...hopefully this water buffalo died a happy, peaceful death after working it's life in a beautiful, lush, rice paddy in bali!! which is where i took this picture....they are really beautiful animals, and hardworking beasts of burden...i saw this sculpture many times before i remembered to have a camera with me....i used a sketchbook a lot this time while traveling, and forgot about the camera sometimes (although we have hundreds of pix)....i guess sketchbook might be overstating it a bit...it was more of a mixed media anything goes kinda book....one that i will share with you as i do more blogs! this is the 1st time i have done a blog entry....and i am a luddite for sure, so this is a big step....luckily i had my lovely friend pam here today to give me the lowdown on this new scene....she was super helpful and FUN besides..she also has a blog....it's called the "one armed woman"....you can find hers in my profile page cause i don't know how to link you to her yet.....just like i don't know how to add colour behind this text....people that know me, they know that i would have been attempting to get some colour here....so, yah, i love skulls, and you will certainly be seeing many here if you come back again!! glass skulls, mixed media skulls, 100 year buffalo skulls, el dia del muerte type skulls...ya know, the pretty ones with daisies for eyes?? ok, well, i will try and publish this 1st post....wish me luck!!!! stay tuned...there is sooo much more to come, for sure!
